I really love your question, and I feel like instead of insulting people's beliefs, you're really just in fear of our world, and infinite worlds beyond. We may never understand why some people just do not look up and say "Why?" Why we're here, what else is there … etc. Even if I believe in God, my God exists as energy. My God is life like in the difference between the hammer and a plant. I think there is energy in all things, the infinite and inconceivable nature of this idea is why people create small and finally "stories" to simplify the why.
